This leads to a huge reduction in tuna supply to Vietnam, while the price increases sharply.
For example, 2 months ago (November 2020), raw fish imported to Vietnam was only 3.5 USD/kg, now increased to 5 USD/kg. The increase in the price of raw fish from abroad also pulled the price of tuna purchased locally. With the same viewpoint of Ms. Thanh, Mr. Le Buu Quoc, Head of Purchasing Department of Thinh Hung Co., Ltd. also said that the price of tuna imported from abroad to Vietnam increased so the domestic fish price increased. Although the export price of Vietnamese tuna to other markets is affected by Covid-19, enterprises have to buy tuna at high prices to maintain production.
According to Mr. Quoc, the company currently receives many export orders to the US. However, tuna exported to the US is mainly consumed at supermarkets, and restaurants have not yet operated much, especially high-class restaurants, which have not reopened.
